The greatest obligation you have to your Self is to be selfish. I cannot say that nothing else matters, that is not true to me, and perhaps you too. Overall though, none of this matters, 'this' being your life, your perceived obligations and goals. You are here for a short time and may choose to entertain yourself with whatever trials and tribulations you choose, perhaps even experience joy and happiness along the way. In the totality of your existence in this realm, none of this matters.
Why?
Nothing else matters because if you find yourself incapable of putting your Self first at every step, you will simply spin in circles with the wonderful distractions of this place, your reality, whether you live in Canada, the UK or India. There is nothing wrong with that, and nothing right with it either. Judgement left the room when you clicked on this site.
The point here is, that everything must start and end with you and nothing else. If you are not putting your spiritual agenda first, then you are nowhere. The great part is that's ok. You are under no obligations here, in life. Whether you choose to put your souls journey first, at the forefront of every thought or not, matters little. You'll get a 'do over' pass at the pearly gates, unless you choose otherwise. Not that I mean hell, that is just a preposterous concept and a strong religious one, but it doesnt exist in my reality ergo it does not exist at all.
Being 'selfish' in and of itself has been painted negatively by the majority of systems and belief sets, but often the truth is hidden from us in plain view. We are raised to think of things a certain way and if they are never questioned later on, when we have the power to think and conceptualize for ourselves, we may paint them that way the rest of our lives. Often this is the birthplace of ignorace - not questioning, not seeking.
In this precious short time that you share with those you have attracted, your only goal can be you, and what we lovingly call 'your purpose'. Your purpose will always serve your highest thought, your highest experience, your pinnacle expressed in reality. Nothing else matters more than this, unless you decide otherwise.
Perhaps you decide to be distracted by whatever comes up, or whichever you allow to come up, it matters little how it arises, and it matters little whether you choose distraction over purpose. Purpose will always be their, patiently waiting for you, never complaining that it is ignored, never angry that it may be set aside for the millionth time. Your purpose will always be there for you, waiting with warm, loving arms to embrace your attention, when you pay it that.
Some people ask 'how do I know what my purpose is?' and simply the answer is, if you do not know it then you are not ready to know it. Some people feel it should be something that arrives to them in a grand dream and to others it simply becomes them. Tools like meditation and quiet can certainly help some, but what is good for the goose is not always good for the non-goose. Never feel that you deserve to worry or doubt that you have a purpose - every one of us does.
Ultimately, our purpose is all the same, to be One. It's what you do in the meantime that is interesting and fun. This is why none of this matters, except of course your Self, your Soul, your higher connection and the way you serve yourself through it.
When you begin to allow your true self to emerge and flow through your ego, without fighting or being distracted, then you will know a place within you that words cannot describe. Space and time will be meaningless to you and you will know more than knowing that you are whole, worthy and loved. You will know that you are safe and protected no matter the choices of your past or your future. You will know that we all are one.
Coming back to it though, none of this matters. So you are part of all that is? Ok, now what? This doesnt matter, because it is the truth and will not change, ever. Therefore, in the time remaining busy yourself with your personal purpose. Fill your life with that. Be all that you can imagine and more. In the face of knowing your true self, your true connection to everything that exists, that which does not exist and all that is in between; be your self.
That is all there is to do, honour your self and your purpose. Practice makes perfect!
With all that I am,

I'm glad to read this post at a time when I feel like I've become obsessed with all things Spirit. I have been putting that first, and sometimes I feel guilty for letting other things slide, but my purpose right now is to find my Self.
Im happy that you gained insight from it.
As for guilt, the only person that can resolve it is you. You seem to feel that 'finding yourself' is what you are focussed on - that doesnt leave a lot of room for guilt from the limited view I have.
If 'finding ourselves' is an ever upward evolving spiral, then it also implies moving away from who you are to who you choose to be, which in itself implies letting go of the things that hold you back from taking your vision of who you wish to be, and making it your reality. This also means letting go of limiting beliefs, like guilt.
Thanks for stopping by
